SM GOH TALKS 'SINGAPORE FEVER'
------------------------------
NEW DELHI - At a lunch meeting hosted by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Singapore Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has suggested businesses in India use the island republic for corporate networking with major Asian companies. Both leaders were also upbeat about prospects for bilateral cooperation.
Noting the growing business links between both countries, Mr Goh said: "The real benefit of this Indian fever is the development of Singapore fever.
"Since 1994, many Indian companies are coming to Singapore (rather) than Singapore companies going to India. Tata has acquired NatSteel, Fortis has acquired Singapore-based company Parkway; that will give Parkway a reason to expand in China and other countries. So it's like a Singapore fever in India."
Mr Goh will attend the Asian Corporate Conference on Saturday, where he will hold discussions with India's strategic thinkers and businessmen.
FAMILY SERVICE CENTRES GET MILLION-DOLLAR SHOT IN THE ARM
---------------------------------------------------------
Ten family service centres funded by the Community Chest are getting a million-dollar shot in the arm to help them reach out to families in need.
The donation, which came from the NTUC FairPrice Foundation, will benefit people such as Madam Chng Pek Har who gets financial support from the Moral Family Service Centre (Buikit Panjang), one of the beneficiaries. The 41-year-old earns $300 a month as a part-time banquet assistant, while her husband makes about $1,200 monthly as a rag-and-bone man.
With the help of the family service centre, her three school-going children get an allowance, which pays for their school fees and textbooks.
Madam Chng also attends financial management workshops organised by the centre.
Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan said charities such as NTUC FairPrice Foundation play an important role alongside Voluntary Welfare Organisations in helping those in need. The foundation has pledged to donate $50 million to various charitable causes over the next 10 years.
POLICE ARREST 24-YEAR-OLD MAN
-----------------------------
The police on Friday arrested a 24-year old man who allegedly attacked his mother with a chopper on Thursday.
The incident is said to have taken place at a Housing and Development Board block in Jurong East, Street 21. The 50-year-old woman was wounded on her forehead and sent to National University Hospital.
She was not warded. The weapon was recovered from their flat.
The man has been charged in court.
COUPLE FOUND DEAD IN BEDOK
--------------------------
SINGAPORE - A husband and wife were found dead at Bedok North Road yesterday.
Police, who were alerted at about 6.40pm, found the body of a 38-year-old man with multiple injuries at the foot of Block 75.
And on the 12th floor, his wife, a 34-year-old woman, was found lying motionless on the floor of the lift lobby.
She appeared to have been stabbed. A knife with bloodstains was recovered from the lift at the same floor.
Residents told MediaCorp they heard yelling and crying at about 6.30pm. Mr Fakir Hussein, who lives in the block opposite, said: "I saw the woman in a yellow top shouting along with two children."
Police have classified them as unnatural deaths and are investigating.
